CASH AND WEIGHT LOSS?!
Researchers at the Mayo Clinic in March 2013 found money is an effective incentive when motivating people to lose weight. 62% of participants who received financial incentives ($20 if they met their monthly goal vs. paying $20 if they fell short of their goal) met their goal, compared with 26% of the non-incentive group. In the incentive group, the participants' mean weight loss was 9.1 lbs (~4.1 kg), and for the non-incentive group it was 2.3 lbs (~1 kg).
This just shows us when we take self out of the equation we readily jump for the carrot When the goal is self fulfilling as we all know we typically fall short. When starting any reasonable diet and exercise program I have always said it is critical to analyze your "why." Why are you doing what you are doing? Cement that in your mind, put sticky notes on your mirror to remind you, put pictures of your kids you are trying to stay alive for to enjoy, put up that picture of celebrity you are trying to look like....you get the idea.
