Good morning folks!
As many of you are aware, I am an advocate for the use of Neti Pots in the treatment of nasal disorders, particularly to clean the sinuses instead of using damaging medications. Neti pots for those of you that are unfamiliar are small reservoirs of warm water with a light saline mixture which is flushed through one nostril and injected throughout the nasal cavity and sinuses then exits out of the other nostril. It is a safe and effective technique to help clear up your nasal passages however is not without small risk. As the FDA reported in September 2012 the improper use of neti pots, as well as other devices for rinsing out the sinuses, has been linked to a higher risk of infection. The FDA warns that if they are not used properly, the user runs a risk of developing serious infections, even potentially fatal ones. The devices are safe and useful overall, as long as they are properly used and cleaned. One reason for the increased risk is for those folks that don't rinse properly or use water without saline which can cause breeding of bacteria due to no salt in the water to help destroy it.
Again, Neti pots or their equivolent are safe, just be sure to follow the directions.
Have a blessed day!
